Garbage Town Amsterdam

It has been a while since I last visited Amsterdam. First time was with my best friend Ahmet in 2003 and the last time should have been with my RWTH Aachen buddy Erman in 2004 while we were visiting The Hague Jazz Festival. There are two very interesting anectodes from this visit as well but this is not the purpose of this post, so I will spare them for the future.

The topic of this post is the shocking condition of the beautiful city Amsterdam and how it got to this situation... There are garbage bags everywhere and they are untidy and busted. It is really unbelievable, how bad it looks.

I came to Amsterdam today with a 5-hours delayed flight, due to the ash clouds blocking the Schiphol Airport air traffic. However, the streets of the city are much worse than its air pollution.

You can see similar views on all over the city and as a visitor/tourist it gave me a very bad impression. I hope there is, at least, a good reason for this mess. Even if so, they have to find a very good and quick solution. Because my friends, it smells much worse than it looks!

Türk'e birşey olmaz! V2

Eğer blogumu öyle ya da böyle takip ediyorsanız, İzlanda'daki volkanik patlamanın meydana geldiği günlerde tüm Avrupa'yı etkisi altına alan kül bulutları etkisi ile iptal olan uçuşlardan nasıl son dakikada etkikenmediğimizin hikayesini ve fotoğrafını hatırlıyorsunuzdur. Bu konuyu biraz da esprili bir şekilde burada paylaşmış, Türk'e birşey olmaz! mesajı ile vermiştim.

Bu olayın üzerinden 1 aydan da fazla geçti ve artık yanardağın etkisini kaybettiğini düşünüyorsunuz değil mi? İşte kazın ayağı öyle değilmiş. :-) Meğersem yanardağın benimle işi bitmemiş ve usul usul yanarak benim bir sonraki seyahat planımı bekliyormuş.

Ve işte bugün o beklediği fırsat eline geçti ve bu sabah Atatürk Havaalanından saat 08:00'de kalkması gereken Amsterdam uçağı Schiphol Havaalanını kapatan kül bulutları sebebi ile tam 5,5 saat rötar yaptı ve ancak saat 13:30'da uçabildim...

Bu işten ne öğrendik? Tamam belki Türk'e birşey olmadı ama papaz her zaman pilav yemiyor. Ne olursa olsun büyük konuşmamak lazımmış... :-)

Doğa için çal!

Daha önce 45 müzik ve doğasever tarafından hayata geçirilen ilk proje olan "Divane Aşık Gibi" parçasından sonra projenin ikinci adımı olan "Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım" parçası bu sefer 91 doğasever tarafından seslendirilmiş.

tedPAD - How to create your future TED-Talk

If you are a fan of TED, statistics and a lot of humor in a very short time, here is Sebastian Wernicke on stage offering all these together. He is turning the tools of statistical analysis on TEDTalks, to come up with a metric for creating "the optimum TEDTalk" based on user ratings.

And he is not just presenting these metrics visually and he also offering this tool online and offline on the following website: http://get-tedpad.com/index.html

You can either choose the white version to create the most phenomenal talk with the top-ten keywords that used in the most favourite TED-Talks, or choose the black version to create a really boring TED-Talk.

Einstein'in mektubu

Bugün bir mail yolu ile elime geçen bu mektubu paylaşmadan edemedim.

17 Eylül 1933 tarihli bu mektupta ünlü fizikçi Albert Einstein'in Türk hükümetine, Nazi zulmü altında kalan bilim insanları ve doktorların ülkesine kabul etmesi için yazdığı satırları okuyabilirsiniz. 1933-1945 yılları arasında sadece kendi vatandaşlarına değil tüm Avrupa ve Dünyaya bir tehdit oluşturan baskıcı ve ırkçı Nazi Almanya'sının sonuçlar böyle olmuş işte.

Ufak bir ayrıntı daha; mektubu 9 Ekim 1933 tarihinde okuyan ve imzalayan kişi de dönemin Başbakanı İsmet İnönü. İmza karşılaştırması için buraya bakabilirsiniz.

Atatürk Orman Çiftliği Zoo

I visited Atatürk Orman Çiftliği Zoo, last weekend. For the record, the zoo was not suitable for photography with very tight fences and reflecting glasses everywhere. However I was lucky to find this player monkey.

This is only one shot of his various poses. I am pretty sure, he was aware of myself and my camera. We both had lots of fun and wanted to share it with you. :-)

Finally, a short comment on the zoo; It looked very dirty and unmaintained to all of us. I hope the zoo management will take immediate actions and hopefully they start doing it with its website and fill in its "Future Plans" subpage... (it is empty!).

A music legend or a tech entrepreneur?

I assume that most of you know Peter Gabriel, the musician and songwriter, who rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the progressive rock group Genesis. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel had another successful solo career.

Now, something you should not know about him, if you are not extremely interested in digital filtering algorithims and content management systems...

Apperently, almost a decade ago Gabriel imagined a future of infinite choice. He predicted a world in which people would access any entertainment, anywhere at any time and invested in it.

I personally used this hand dryer at Prague airport and experienced a really good drying effect. I regret to say it but, this machine can cause a big problem for the industry I work for...

Last December the consultancy e-mailed a 21-question poll to senior executives around the globe.
