Einstein'in mektubu

Bugün bir mail yolu ile elime geçen bu mektubu paylaşmadan edemedim.

17 Eylül 1933 tarihli bu mektupta ünlü fizikçi Albert Einstein'in Türk hükümetine, Nazi zulmü altında kalan bilim insanları ve doktorların ülkesine kabul etmesi için yazdığı satırları okuyabilirsiniz. 1933-1945 yılları arasında sadece kendi vatandaşlarına değil tüm Avrupa ve Dünyaya bir tehdit oluşturan baskıcı ve ırkçı Nazi Almanya'sının sonuçlar böyle olmuş işte.

Ufak bir ayrıntı daha; mektubu 9 Ekim 1933 tarihinde okuyan ve imzalayan kişi de dönemin Başbakanı İsmet İnönü. İmza karşılaştırması için buraya bakabilirsiniz.

Atatürk Orman Çiftliği Zoo

I visited Atatürk Orman Çiftliği Zoo, last weekend. For the record, the zoo was not suitable for photography with very tight fences and reflecting glasses everywhere. However I was lucky to find this player monkey.

This is only one shot of his various poses. I am pretty sure, he was aware of myself and my camera. We both had lots of fun and wanted to share it with you. :-)

Finally, a short comment on the zoo; It looked very dirty and unmaintained to all of us. I hope the zoo management will take immediate actions and hopefully they start doing it with its website and fill in its "Future Plans" subpage... (it is empty!).

A music legend or a tech entrepreneur?

I assume that most of you know Peter Gabriel, the musician and songwriter, who rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the progressive rock group Genesis. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel had another successful solo career.

Now, something you should not know about him, if you are not extremely interested in digital filtering algorithims and content management systems...

Apperently, almost a decade ago Gabriel imagined a future of infinite choice. He predicted a world in which people would access any entertainment, anywhere at any time and invested in it.

In 2004, Peter was introduced to the physicist and software entrepreneur, Martin Hopkins. This was a man, who shared Peter's vision, but had also developed a solution. As a passionate music fan, Martin had designed a piece of software to manage his music collection. The programme learned about his tastes and, using artificial intelligence, offered playlists and recommendations.

The two men joined forces with the venture capital specialist, Eden Ventures and The Filter was born... Successful trials of a playlist desktop application and a recommendations website quickly showed how effective and reliable the technology was, even with large volumes and different formats. New user interface tools and applications were launched and vast amounts of consumption and catalogue data were gathered and crunched. The Filter began to attract attention from industry commentators and, crucially, interest from commercial partners grew.

And today...
The Filter uses its world-leading recommendations and relevance systems to help content owners, publishers and aggregators around the world maximise their content and services. The Filter is proven to increase usage and engagement which in turn improves margins... making entertainment services more efficient and competitive. With video, music, applications and games, The Filter consistently out-performs editorial and automated recommendations and crucially, outputs can be skewed or biased to meet specific business goals.
One day, all entertainment will be optimised this way. Until then, The Filter is unique.

Suprising isn't it? This is not only a story of a development of a prospering invention, but also an unknown story of how a music legend can turn into a tech entrepeneur and investor.

I personally used this hand dryer at Prague airport and experienced a really good drying effect. I regret to say it but, this machine can cause a big problem for the industry I work for...

The 25 Most Innovative Companies 2010

Bloomberg BusinessWeek's Most Innovative Companies special report is based on data from longtime partner Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Last December the consultancy e-mailed a 21-question poll to senior executives around the globe. • 5 computer (hardware&software), 2 automotive, 2 customer electronics companies in top ten. Only GE is left out, because it is not easy to categorize it.
• 6 from USA, 2 from Japan, 1 from South Korea and 1 from China.
• Automotive giant BYD is the first chinese firm to get to this list, however, it is likely to foresee it won't be the last!

A "severe competition" example from Dresden

I was in Germany for business this week. This picture is taken on Prague Street, the most famous shopping street of Dresden. I ran across this scene when I was trying to find a place to eat dinner.

For those who can not understand the advertisement board in german, it says; "Follow this way for the coffee pleasure. Your McCafe is only 200 m away."

Isn't it funny and also challenging to put such a commercial right next to Starbucks?
I believe this vary example shows how far the "severe competition" between companies and also brands have become.

In answer to that, I have just read that Starbucks is about to test the addition of wine and beer to the menu at one of its Seattle stores, which it has even given a new name.
The store, opening next week, is called "15th Ave. Coffee and Tea inspired by Starbucks" — a reflection of the neighborhood in which it's located.

The test move to sell alcohol is seen as a clear attempt to fight off growing competition from McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts according to the experts.

Let's see how further this kind of competitions will go.

Yalova Kağıt Müzesi Part 2

Yalova’da kurulması planlanan “İbrahim Müteferrika Kağıt Müzesi” çalışmaları kapsamında Yalova Belediyesi, Yalova Üniversitesi ve İpek Kağıt işbirliği çerçevesinde oluşturulan heyet 16–18 Mart 2010 tarihlerinde Almanya Düren Kağıt Müzesi (Papiermuseum Düren) ziyaretini gerçekleştirmiştir.

Ziyarete Yalova Belediye Başkanı Yakup B. Koçal, Yalova Belediyesi Müze Sorumlusu Esra Fitoz, Yalova Üniversitesi Kağıt Bilimi ve Mühendisliği Bölümü Kurulum Sorumlusu Güner Ekşi ve İpek Kağıt Proses Geliştirme Sorumlu Uzmanı Sinan Yorgancıgil katılmıştır. Ayrıca, Almanya’da yaşayan Yalovalı Vatandaşımız Emine Emel Yıldız, iletişim kolaylığı sağlamak ve destek olmak amacı ile heyetimize Almanya’da eşlik etmiştir.
Kağıt müzesi ziyareti, 17 Mart 2010 tarihinde müzede düzenlenen toplantı ile başlamıştır. Toplantıda Türkiye heyetini karşılamak üzere, Düren Belediye Başkanı Paul Larue, Düren Kağıt Müzesi Direktörü Dr. Renate Goldmann, Yalova kardeş şehir Bad Godesberg’i temsilen Bad Godesberg Belediye Eski Başkanı Ulli Hauschild ve Düren basını hazır bulunmuştur.

Toplantı Düren Belediye Başkanı Paul Larue’nin konuşması ile başlamıştır. Düren Belediye Başkanı, kentine gösterilen ilgi nedeni ile çok mutlu olduklarını ve Yalova ile işbirliğine açık olduklarını belirterek Düren’de Türklerin yoğun olarak yaşadığını, 2009 yılında Düren ile Karadeniz Ereğli’nin kardeş şehir protokolü imzaladıklarını söylemiştir. Toplantı Yalova Belediye Başkanı Yakup B. Koçal’ın konuşması ile devam etmiştir. Başkan Koçal teşekkürlerimizi ilettikten sonra, Yalova’da kağıda olan ilgi, kağıt müzesi kurulumu, İbrahim Müteferrika ve Yalova kağıt sanayii hakkında tanıtım yaparak kağıt müzesi kurulum projesinde belediye-üniversite-sanayii işbirliğinden söz etmiştir. Konuşmasının devamında Başkan Koçal, öncelikli amacımızın, Düren Kağıt Müzesinin Almanya’da kurulan ilk kağıt müzesi olması ve Düren’in Almanya kağıt sanayisinin yoğunlaştığı bir bölgede bulunmasından dolayı kazanılan bilgi birikiminden faydalanmak ve Yalova’da kağıt müzesi kurulum çalışmaları süresince gerekli planlamanın yapılması ve uygulamaya geçilmesi aşamalarında işbirliği gerçekleştirmek istediklerini belirtmiş, gerçekleştirilen ziyaret sonucunda hedefimizin, müze kurulumu yol haritamızı belirlemek olduğu vurgulanmıştır.

Müze Direktörü Dr. Renate Goldmann yeni kurulacak müzenin hem teknik hem sanatsal yönden 21. Yüzyıla yakışır bir müze olması gerektiğini, bunu sağlamak için yeterli zaman harcanıp, enerji katılarak planlamaya özellikle önem verilmesi gerektiğinin altını çizmiştir. Ayrıca, kendi yapılanmaları, düşündükleri yenilikler ve müze kurulumunda önemli unsurlar üzerinde durmuştur. Düren Kağıt Müzesi ve yanında bulunan Leopold-Hoesch Kağıt Sanatı Müzesinin kurulumunda kağıt endüstrisinin önemli katkıları olduğunu vurgulayarak gerektiğinde Düren Kağıt Müzesinden Yalova’ya emanet malzeme ve sergiler de verilebileceğini sözünü vermiştir.

Toplantı sonrası kağıt müzesi, müze direktörü ve ekibi rehberliğinde ayrıntılı olarak gezilmiş ve gerekli bilgiler toplanmıştır. Yalova Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi Kağıt Bilimi ve Mühendisliği Bölümü kurulum çalışmaları hızla ilerlemektedir. Bu başarılı ziyareti gerçekleştiren heyeti kutlar, Belediye Başkanımız Yakup B. Koçal’a teşekkür ederiz.
